Mary Van Liew was a daughter of Henry Van Liew and his wife Jane, born in October 1842 in Seneca County, New York.
The 1850 U.S. Census recorded 7-year-old Mary in her parents' household in Ovid, Seneca County, New York. Household members were Henry Van Liew, 37 and a farmer; Jane Van Liew, 32; Lucy Van Liew, 11; Sarah Ann Van LIew, 9; Mary Van Liew, 7; William Van Liew, 4; and one-year-old twins James and John Van Liew. All were born in New York; the four older children all had attended school that year.[1]
The 1860 U.S. Census recorded 17-year-old Mary in her parents' household in Lodi, Seneca County, New York. Household members were Henry Van Liew, 46 and a farmer; Jane Van Liew, 41; Lucy Van Liew, 21 and a "Com. S. teacher"; Sarah Van Liew, 19; Mary Van Liew, 17; James Van Liew, 11; John Van Liew, 11; Levina Vaw Liew, 7; and Solomon Wilson, 27, a farm laborer. All were born in Seneca County. Henry Van Liew reported $7000 real estate and $3500 personal estate. [2]
She married Firman W. Clawson of Lodi, Seneca County, in about 1866.
The 1900 U.S. Census recorded 55-year-old Ferman W. Clawson and wife Mary Clawson, 58, in Royal Oak, Michigan, with five unmarried children. Ferman and Mary were natives of New York, with parents born in New York, who had been married 34 years. Mary was born in October 1842; she had had five children, all of them still living. Ferman was described as a doctor; his birth date was recorded as March 1845. Children in the household were daughter Ina, age 25 (born March 1875); daughter Edith, 19 (born August 1880); daughter Edna, 15 (born October 1884); son Waldo, 12 (born March 1888); and daughter Louise, 9 (born August 1890). All of the children were born in Michigan to parents born in New York; all were "at school."[3]
The 1910 U.S. Census recorded Fruian Clawson, age 69 and a dentist, on Putnam Avenue in Detroit, Michigan, with wife Mary Clawson, 68, and four unmarried children: daughters Edith Clawson, 29, Edna Clawson, 25, and Louise Clawson, 19, and son Loyd Clawson, 22. Edith and Edna were public school teachers, Louise had attended school that year, and Loyd was a farmer. Fruian and Mary had been married 44 years; Mary had had five children, all living.[4]
Mary died before 1920, when the U.S. Census recorded F. W. Clawson, age 79 and a widower, on Putnam Avenue in Detroit, Michigan, sharing his home with unmarried adult daughters Edna A. Clawson and Mary L. Clawson.[5]
